A
Review of Legends of the Plastic Chairs:
'I laughed. I cried. It became a part of me.’
These three sentences spoken together, dripping
with sarcasm, were a popular catch phrase back when I was in college, and one I used with abandon until I wore it out. After
reading Legends of the Plastic Chairs, however, the phrase returns to mind, now with an entirely different meaning. From
the first pages, author Patricia Curtis draws the reader into her life. By the last page, you will have laughed, you
will have cried, and her inspiring story will have become a part of you.
Although
her story of growing up in a childhood full of physical and psychological abuse and mental illness is all too common in our
society, Curtis’ approach in the telling is unique. Simply written and void of the clichés
and over-dramatization meant to shock and awe the reader, Curtis lets us experience the horrors as well as the joys of her
life on our own terms. Without the trappings of mountains of tedious description, her audience is free
to accompany her on the journey of a lifetime, from tragedy to triumph. I predict this book will inspire many to begin the journey to their own happiness.
